The Southern Isles

The southern Isles at Your Doorstep

There are numerous small islands of the Noumea Coast, for example, l'Île aux Canards, l'Îlot Maître or l'Îlot Amédée. All of these can be reached in a few minutes from Port-Moselle or Anse-Vata, ideal for a half-day-or full-day outing.

The essential

Accessible from Noumea

As a whole, the Parc du Lagon Sud is considered to be of "Interntional Interest" in terms of its biodiversity. Its waters are cooler than those of Grande Terre, and as a result, they harbour flora and fauna that are more similar to their counterparts in New Zealand than those in the rest of New Caledonia. This is the home of various species of sponges and sea urchins. Three species of sea turtles are found here, including the famous "green turtle", which comes to lay its eggs. And this is the main area for reproduction of humpback whales. There are numerous companies who organize excursions to southern islets, lasting several days and departing from Noumea.

Inescapables

In the heart of the great southern lagoon

L'îlot Ouen

Located nearly halfway between Noumea and l'Île des Pins, l'Îlot Ouen has a population of about a hundred, mostly members of the Ouara tribe, living in the middle of a coconut grove. While fishing remains the principle economic activity on the isle, from June to September tourists pack in to see the humpback whales, which come to reproduce in the lagoon's temperate waters.

A Long Weekend on the Sea

Departing from Noumea, local companies organize sea excursions lasting several days, often in the form of "four-day weekends", from Friday to Monday, with the opportunity to discover various southern islets: Ouen, Mato, Ua, Kouare and N'Da. You will leave on Friday evening, with the chance to enjoy lovely sunset over the sea.

The Five-Isle Plateau

Departing from Noumea, the companies offer two-day excursions to explore the "Five Isles" On the way, you can enjoy a series of small islands -all of them tiny unihabited utopias. The destinations awaiting you are islets with white sand beaches, next to beautiful reefs and superb underwater worlds, which you can explore.
