Unless the west wind blows strongly enough, you won’t get any surfing action in New Caledonia’s cove beaches… in that case, hop on a boat and head to the coral reef. Offshore is where the best surfing conditions can be found because the reef breaks the ocean’s surf, hence greatly diminishing the size and speed of waves within the lagoon. Locals will gladly share their favorite spots with you. The best surf usually occurs around the reef’s drop-offs.
Surfing along the coral reef is a unique riding experience, so get ready for some adrenalin-pumping action! Icing on the cake: New Caledonian surf spots are delightfully uncrowded.
