Windsurfing is undoubtedly New Caledonia’s most popular water sport. All over Grande Terre, water sports centers and schools offer windsurfing lessons. In Nouméa, Anse Vata is the mythical gathering spot for all windsurfers. Not a day goes by without it being overtaken by the frenetic ballet of colorful windsurf sails that speed towards the shores of Ilot Canard. For locals and visitors alike, Anse Vata is the perfect place to practice windsurfing safely.         


New Caledonia hosts many prestigious competitions throughout the year, including the final PWA world tour event. Outside Nouméa, windsurfing and kitesurfing can be enjoyed in many spots of Grande Terre as well as on the Loyalty Islands. If you’re a novice, no worries…you can easily learn to windsurf at any age and New Caledonia features famous spots that are ideal for beginners. From Nouméa to Hienghène, Lifou, Koumac or Bourail, just choose the backdrop that suits you best!

Around Anse Vata and in various water sports centers, learn to windsurf with professionals that will teach you the discipline’s basics. Whether you prefer private or group lessons, you will quickly get on the water and enjoy the exceptional conditions the lagoon has to offer.

International competitions

For the past 3 years, New Caledonia has hosted the last event of the PWA World Tour. The best competitors in the world gather in Anse Vata for an exciting round of racing. The BlueScope Race takes place in mid-September: an adrenalin-pumping event, challenging even for experienced competitors who race from the Amédée Lighthouse to Anse Vata. A truly unique competition as windsurfers race with and measure up to other disciplines.

Lifou’s scene

Over the years, Lifou’s Chateaubriand Bay has become a reputed Windsurfing spot. You can rent gear and equipment from local water sports centers. No matter your level, enjoy lessons and sensational windsurfing sessions.
